Lineage: 74min, P, Audience, Master (cassette) > 5" reel at 3 3/4 ips > DAT > CDR > CDR
Raw source (modified version also circulating).
The master is lost, the taper had transferred it to a reel so this is the lowest generation available.

At the end of the tape there's c.5 min of Led Zeppelin:
13 Bring it on home (left channel drops out at 2.38, end fades out)

The Met Centre, Bloomington, Minnesota, USA?
Sunday 12 April 1970?
The original cassette had no info about the Led Zeppelin recording so the date and location is very likely later guesswork based on date and location of the Hendrix recording but this seems to be the date Led Zeppelin collectors give to this tape.

The sound for the rehearsals used in the film is a different recording than this soundboard tape. The film sound was probably recorded separately by the film crew along with the other non-concert audio. It could be that this sounboard tape is complete and Ezy Ryder just wasn't recorded on multitrack.

Several different edits of the same source for the soundboard tape circulate. This composite has been edited together from 3 different copies and is almost seamless and complete apart from the pre-concert cut during the intro (which probably is on the multitrack master). To my knowledge a complete unedited uniform source does not circulate. Songs were cut and edits made to all copies in order to "mark" them so this composite is the only way to hear the complete unedited concert in soundboard quality. Circulates as ATM-0256/57 "Berkeley 1st Show - Complete Soundboard".

Stereo audience recording, pitch corrected by +5.2 %, phase and balance of channels also corrected. Circulates as ATM-173/174 "Atlanta `70"

The tape used to patch the soundboard recording for the Sony Legacy "Freedom: Jimi Hendrix Experience Atlanta Pop Festival" 2 cd is described in the liner notes as "film crew's audio recording". It's very likely to be this tape, known to collectors as an audience recording but if you listen carefully to the separation you'll notice that the audience and wind noise are on the left channel only, chat by the the crew and other people behind the stage on the right channel only. The guitar, bass & drums are loud and clear as the mics were on stage next to the amps but Jimi's vocal is faint and distant as it was not coming through the band's gear but through the festival p.a.

This is very much consistant with the kind of recording that you would get if you had a stereo tape deck on stage and would point one mic towards the audience and place the other further back behind the amps. At the start of the tape you can hear some people (Jimi's roadies?) discussing that "they" are recording everything which they are not supposed to do, either a reference to the multitrack or more likely this reel, multitrack must have been agreed upon well in advance but if the roadies spotted the deck recording the stage audio for the film crew that might have lead to the discussion we hear. Just speculation, but no matter whoever is talking and about what exactly it clearly isn't members of the crowd.

Recorded by Neal Skok, possibly on Craig 212 portable reel to reel at 3.75ips
This version circulated in 2000, eq'd & de-noised version of the so-called "master clone" which is actually a incomplete (c.1min of intro missing) clone of a tape dub made via speakers, if even that. A real "line" dub of the master has never circulated, all copies derive from the speaker dub of the master. On this and all previously circulated versions the tracks are in incorrect running order.
Lineage: 73min, P, Audience, Master > ?,
Composite: raw version of the "master clone" re-sequenced, volume fluctuations evened out & pitch corrected with the missing intro and a tape cut after "Getting My Heart Back Together" patched in from a different transfer.

Mono soundboard recording from the "Last American Concert" (The Jupiter S-444) bootleg lp (2nd pressing). Drums overdubbed by Mitch Mitchell at Electric Lady Studios.
Track 1 starts with a short snippet of Jimi thanking the crowd (repeated from the end of Foxy lady).
The choice of songs (the lp includes all of the tracks included in the Rainbow Bridge -movie along with others that weren't used) and the editing (the edit in "In from the storm" also appears in the movie soundtrack, the medley segment was the only part of the medley used in the movie) suggests that this lp could be lifted from the sound track of the original edit of the concert film before Chuck Wein re-edited it.

A different version of the tape exist with a complete version of Red House - only available on YouTube. Who has lossless files, according to the uploader of the video "This is from a boot that I picked up at an LA convention", where can I get this disc?

Lineage: 30min, R, Audience, Master > low (has possibly gone through an mp3 stage) > cdr
Recorded by Jim & Bill Worthley, circulated in May 2006. The original cdr that this show surfaced on had clicks at every index & noises at 2.41, 2.44, 4.08, 5.19 & 6.25 in Red House, these have been repaired on this copy. Also included on the disc is an mpg-file of the 8mm film shot by Paul Wultz.
It would seem that this is not a direct digital transfer of the master, there are phase & balance fluctuations and heavy leakage in the left channel all the way through the tape while the music would seem to be mono with no channel separation to speak of. Probably a mono master was copied on another tape in "stereo", ie there's at least one analog generation in the lineage between the master tape and the cdr transfer. Also, everything above 12k is cut which probably is a sign of lossy compression, all circulating copies have this same problem.

13 Lover man

Lineage: 61min, VG, Audience, Master > 1st
First source recorded by Heinz E. NOTE: This is a new transfer of the master circulated in 2000 so it's possible that the drop-outs now are on the master due to ageing of the tape. However, they weren't originally on the master since older copies of this tape don't have these drop-outs.

Second source recorded by Detlev B. A longer recording did exist (and maybe still does), Heinz E. who taped the first source copied the last tracks from this recording to complement his own tape (which runs a bit shorter), this is why just two tracks from this source circulate.

MD5 (wav) - Ronnie_Scotts_16_September_1970_master_2010_transfer_wav.md5
Recorded on a Philips C-90 cassette by Bill Baker using a Sony TC-100A portable cassette recorder and a Sony handheld dynamic microphone.

Circulated in December 2010 as ATM-249/250 "Eric Burdon and War at Ronnie Scott's - master".
An incomplete unknown generation 42 minute version of this tape circulated for several years before the complete tape came into circulation in 2008. That 2008 transfer, however, was a lossy cassette master > Windows wma -transfer. This new 2010 transfer, direct from the master cassette to wav, can be recognized easily as it includes an extra instrumental snippet at the start of disc 1 before "Gun" which was missing on the inferior wma-transfer.

Parts of the tape were originally first circulated on the "Can You Please Crawl Out Your Window?" -bootleg LP. While the sound quality in general is inferior on the LP the master as it is now has some unrepairable drop-outs that are later damage, they are not audible on the bootleg LP. The taper made several reel to reel copies of the tape in the 70s (one given to War manager Jerry Goldstein), hopefully one of those will pop up one day.

In 1998 a press release from Genesis Media Group announced that it had aquired "exclusive worldwide rights" for a recording of this show from Howard Scott and that it would be released "this summer". Some short bits of the tape were aired on the tv show "Hard Copy" and from what one is able to hear it sounds very much like the tape Bill Baker made.

Jerry Goldstein has claimed he recorded the show as well, at this point it seems most likely that the tape Goldstein has is the one given to him by Bill Baker and Howard Scott either ended up with the original reel or got a copy of it.
